Proton VPN's privacy credentials are the strongest of any provider reviewed here. Switzerland's legal framework imposes no mandatory data-retention obligation and has consistently refused to co-operate with foreign law enforcement on the same terms as EU or US providers. Proton has published recurring external audits by SEC Consult - one of the few providers to audit annually.
The open-source clients mean the code running on your device can be inspected. A privacy policy and audit only cover server-side infrastructure; the client is equally capable of leaking data if built incorrectly. Proton publishes the client source, which no marketing claim can substitute for.
